New Pond & Related Plants

I am going to sink a small pond...4 foot by 3 foot with a depth of 1 foot more as a feature than a "working " pond
? What plants could I consider planting in and out of the water
It is a south facing garden and just in front of the house and sheltered on one side by a 2 foot tall couple of perennial plants

Hi NewBoy. That will be lovely but I'd suggest you make at least part of a good bit deeper. It helps to prevent freezing in winter and also heating up too quickly at this time of year. If you want a water lily then this would provide a better depth for it too. Although you want it as a feature, wildlife of all kinds will want to use it, so I'd suggest you make a shallower end as well - a slope with gravel - or some graduated shelves so that access is good. Shelves also provide an area for for marginal planting which is what you're probably looking for. There are loads to choose from depending on your likes and dislikes. I have a tiny pond here and I have a Juncus spiralis (corkscrew rush) and some white Caltha (marsh marigold) and further out a little fern and some Chrysographes Irises. I also have some self seeded Lady's Smock which I've got in a pot ready to go in a little further away from those next to a Clematis and a Phormium and a Libertia. Those last two are evergreen so that there's always something there during winter. that's the most important thing - some cover nearby for birds and small visitors, and froglets if you introduce some spawn.
In the pond on a shelf I have Equisetum andsomething else with a white flower that I can't remember the name of (
) and a pygmy water lily in the deep section. If you have a particular colour scheme you like, you can work round that. I'd suggest you take a look at some of the specialist sites online to get an idea of what's available. Make sure you pick things that won't grow too big and take over the entire pond.
Hope that's of some use - lots of people here have ponds and I'm sure they'll give you further suggestions too
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
Hello there, I think that a water lily would be nice addition to your pond. You can also add a lot of other designs as well.
