New weedkiller

Hi all

Do you know what the latest weed killer is.Its acaetic acid, otherwise known as VINEGAR..Fantastic news. The stuff we put on our chips kills weeds!

Beware however it only kills the tops like paraquat used to do.So its only any good for annuals, but what a marvelous discovery this should please even the greenest gardener.

However the vinegar is highly concentrated and you wouldn't want any on your chips but when diluted and used it is harmless to us and wildlife. The industry is finaly listening.

Interestingly did you know that when glyphosate first came out,the reps would demonstrate it's non toxicity by drinkng a cup full!

Yes, ginnie, vinegar is one of my gardening friends!   It does a good job on liverwort for me.   I hate that stuff with a passion, because it pops up all over the place, even on the gravel drive.   I can understand liverwort growing in damp spots, but I certainly wouldn't think a gravel drive is suitable.

If I buy plants from a Garden Centre I always check very carefully to ensure I'm not taking liverwort home with me as well.   I'm sure that's where it emanated from in my garden.

I don't believe the story about reps drinking cup fulls. It is DEADLY when drunk in modest quantities.

I suspect liverwort pops up wherever conditions are right. It grows in poor soil, so a gravel drive might fit the bill. Perhaps you get nostoc too? (Looks like algae.)

It is true believe it or not. When a friend of mine did his pesticide training. They were told this by the teachers.

Glyphosate was developed as a new washing up liquid. The chemist couldn't get it right, and he threw it out of the window.A week later he noticed that the grass had died and the rest as they say is history. You wouldn't want to drink it now because of all the other stuff in it.Wetting agents etc. This is also what the told him.

Yes I have trouble with liverworts in block paving, but the vinegar wallops them too.

Some are daft enough to eat anything. Wasn't there something similar with DDT?

I was told by my lecturer whom I believe was involved with the trials, that around £1m were spent developing paraquat and around £15m on failing to find an antidote to what was a nasty poison. It was originally formulated as a growth retardant for cereal crops, to reduce the height of the stalk, but worked rather too well and reduced growth to nothing.

There is an article in Which garden magazine on latest findings re glyphosphate being cancer causing. i use vinegar mixed with small amount of salt and a squirt of washing liquid to rid the brick driveway of weeds. Sounds as if someone is trying to jump on bandwagon if they are now selling a 'special' vinegar for gardening. Probably at a special price too

We all need to come away from weedkillers. the best weedkiller of all is your hand.Pull the beggers out.Or accept that you will always have a few.I am always blown away by the woodlands and wild areas of our country. The plants that make up these areas are weeds!!

Woodlands and wild areas are not paths or driveways.   Weeds can't always be handpulled, it's not such an easy answer to them.
