Turf and Trees

Hi all,

New to the forum and gardening!

Recently moved into a new built property so all i got as a garden was a pile of mud. just had a pation and some block paving put in so now its time to deal with the rest of it.

Yesterday i spent several hours removing the majority of the stones and all the weeds that had popped up. Raked it over a few times which seems to have got rid of the all the weeds and im currently just watering the soil to see if anything pops up so i can remove it. Can anyone advise me on what to do next? could it be seeded or would turf be best? and what do i need to do next? would be doing it all myself so need all the help i can get.

being a new build its not the biggest of gardens and overlooked, which i didnt really consider when i brought it. along the overlooked side ive got a brick wall around the garden and wondered if there are any trees i could use to give abit of privacy?

ill try upload a pic to show the garden.

Sorry for rambling on especially on my first post, and thanks in advance for any help

I rotavated mine with a hired rotavator as the soil was compacted due to the building of the house. My soil was full of bricks and paving slabs and allsorts too. I turfed it. It was the best option if not the cheapest and I have a good lawn now. The front was seeded by the house builder and is full of weeds and patchy. Im making it better but its not as good as the turf.

  • Thanks for the reply, forgot to mention it was rotavated by the site a couple of weeks ago, they didnt do the best job because they said it was to dry and hard to do, the patches that they struggled to do i dug up and raked several times. did you do anything once it was rotavated and leveled? cheers

No had already dug up the weeds I just turfed it after that. I regularly had the sprinkler on until the turf had established which is a pain when your on a water meter like me in a new build.

As for privacy I planted a lot of clematis around the fence but no trees the have covered the fence well and look better but to be honest it hasnt really increased the privacy.

  • snap im on the meter aswell, hopefully we get some rain as im hoping to lay the turf then im away for 2 weeks. ideally im hoping to avoid plants, just wondered if there was any trees that wouldnt take up to much ground space and cover over the wall.

if thats possible? is it safe next to a garden wall? dont want the roots affecting the wall

    thanks for the replys

I am new too,I had also learn more too.Regards!

  • sorry for the delayed reply been busy grafting. its not level with the brick after removing them out the mud today and finding concrete blocks that weighed a ton. decided to turf it which ill finish this week, the more i dug it over the more stones appeared. if i do it anymore it will become pea gravel rather than soil.

    cheers all
