ivy question

I am trying to grow elephant ear ivy up a tall fence, the ivy is about 18 inches high but the leaves are already getting huge. Would it grow higher quicker if I cut off some of the bigger leaves?

Thanks Edd, yes it is Hedera canariensis, though in all honesty I did not know that. It was a gift.
Here is a photo. I would like it high but not too spread wide. What should I do?
I also love history Edd and old books, with the smell of leather, paper and ink and with all the binding faults of the old guilds of bookbinders, ruffian's who liked their drink and fighting.
With sentences like " printed and to be sold at the sign of the blue boar in St Paul,s churchyard".
Kindle cannot do that!!!
It will grow quickly enough. This is a bit of a thug of an ivy, with thick, tough stems. I have variegated versions and both are huge and very quickly outgrew their allotted space. One has gone up a cherry tree and will probably bring it down with the weight before too long. On the fence, it grows up and out across the grass as well, and the stems are so tough they sometimes stop the lawnmower. Can you tell I wish it hadn't been planted? (It was there when I moved in 19 years ago).
But Joe said it was a fence!
