Strawberry and Raspberry together

I have two rows of raspberry's 6 summer and 6 autumn, 6 feet apart.

I was planning to place strawberry's between the two rows.

Is this be a good idea. I appreciate raspberry's are shallow rooted and thought the strawberry's would compete against them.

I would have thought the raspberries would shade the strawbs.

I agree, you can get two crops from autumn raspberries when they've fruited in the autumn leave the canes until summer & they will fruit again then cut the fruited canes down then they will grow the canes for that autumn

Which way do your rows run?  East to West?  Watch during the day and ensure the area has full sun.  If so, strawberries would be fine between the rows.  If you keep the raspberries tidy in their row, there won't be competition between them as they'll be three feet apart.

  • I've grown raspberries within 3 feet of strawberries for years and have had great crops from both. I even got 15kg of strawberries from my ever bearer plants last season!

Yeah, I have my strawberries planted about 10 inches from my raspberries.. sort of under-planted, really.  It all depends on how the sun falls.. they'll be fine, as long as they have enough light.

  • Thanks to everyone who answered. As the strawberries are in full sun I will go ahead and plant them.

    Thanks again.

My strawberries are just coming into flower and my autumn raspberries are only similar in height to the strawberries (although in a different place) so I would have thought you would be OK to get a crop of strawberries before they get shadowed if it happens that the autumn raspberry row will be on the sunny side....
