Liatris Spicata

Hi all

I'm having trouble getting my liatris spicata corms to germinate . I have planted them in pots a few weeks ago and as yet none have produced any new shoots ..i may have also over watered them .

Any advice would be appreciated

A bare rooted dried up thing out of a bag which needs to shoot?

Or have you sown seeds which need to germinate?

Yes the ones you get as dried roots in a bag .

I would expect to see some signs of life after a few weeks, is there nothing to see at all? You could ease it out of the pot and see if the roots have started shooting, they're more important than the top initially. Don't overwater, the plant isn't using any.

This is theoretical on my part. I don't buy dried roots in bags. image

Not wanting to be picky Nut, but I think Liatris come as bulbs / tubers.

How can you lie there and think of England
When you don't even know who's in the team

  • Hi Nigel, I planted my corms out in March straight into the ground, I live in the northwest of England in Lancashire, I planted them in a south-facing border and they took about a month to show through the soil. They survived the heavy rains we had in March which flooded our garden for 3 days, and out of the ten planted, eight have come through and they are now about 6 inches high. Never grown these before but I saw some last night on a TV programme about some designers competing to build a garden at Chelsea. I think now the soil is warming up they will sprout but If you have space I think these look superb in a big group out in a border. Good luck with them!

They do and they're usually eager to show, but be patient, and not too much water until they are skyward

Did you plant the right end up?image

  • Wintersong I definitely planted mine the right way up -  even measured the space between each bulb, do I need therapy?image
