yes ,I think your right Linda -Joe,more likely to be also pigeons as they love tearing leaves and eating them(as in my lilac)and you don't need to be an expert to read the signs,droppings,footprints,kind of damage ,e.t.c..
We have deer and have seen them at the bottom of the garden , If water voles do not venture across the 4 acr field then I can rule these out . I think I can draw a line through this now .

To everyone for their views on this problem , I am very grateful, apart from the water voles any one of the suggestions or even ALL of them could be the culprit !.
The veg plot is in an area that is not on view from the house ,so next year I will plan differantly. Maybe I can start harvesting the veg a bit sooner , plant enough for us and the wildlife - what ever it was ,
