salad cropping

iceice Posts: 332
I've a square foot style veg bed which planted some salads. They're all starting to grow well and radishes cropping well. When do I resow and where to keep the plot productive. Is how big do they need to be to sow again and do you sow where pulled up previous or off set. I've raddish, spring onion, rocket, little gems and spinach

Spring onions will take a lot longer than the others, three or four months, so resowing probably isn't on.

The radish would be the quickest of them to crop so they should be the priority for resowing. You can resow radishes in the same spot, I do it all the time. And, given their size, you can sow them in any available space between the greens.

The rocket should be "cut and come again", regenerating itself, so you shouldn't need to resow providing you don't over-harvest.

Similar story with spinach to rocket, except if you let the spinach dry out it will 'bolt' or run to seed, in which case pull it up and sow some more. I usually sow a second row a few weeks after the first row so that if the first bolt I can harvest from the second row until the re-seeded first row are ready again. I can eat a lot of spinach image Sowings in July probably won't mature but you can still get baby leaves off them, which is probably all you are after as a salad crop anyway.

I re-sow in the same row but move the rows year to year.

It's well worth adding German Mustard as a salad leaf to be picked young to your square-foot scheme - mine crops all year (near sea-level & coastal in Pembrokeshire).
