Growing Plants

VoyagerxpVoyagerxp Posts: 651

I've only been growing plants since  last summer, i always brought them ready grownimage. Autumn last year i built a greenhouse to grow my own plants & started by growing some alpine plants i wanted for my garden from seed. They have come on well but i'm not sure when plants are grown enough to plant out. Two of the plants i've been growing are Saponaria ocymoides & Dianthus deltoides, today i went to a local garden center and saw these 2 plants but both were smaller than mine and in smaller pots. Not sure if i've repotted more than i needed to. Can a plant be over potted?. Very unsure about this.

The theory is that you should pot up in gradual increments, so that the soil doesn't get overly waterlogged and lead to a excess fungal growth.  So yes, a plant can be over potted.. but a lot depends on the plant and compost mix as to whether it will actually result in an issue.

Hopefully someone can advise on those specific plants.

It sounds like you have just grown some nice hefty plants that will have a much better chance of establishing than little ones. Just harden off before planting out!

Thanks, I just couldn't believe how big mine were to the garden centers. i'll get them hardened off and get them out.
