Patchy Lawn.
I'm very new to gardening and need some advice on our lawn.
This year our lawn seems to have a slightly different grass growing within it, very straw like. I was wondering firstly what it is and is it easy to remove?

I thought I'll cut the lawn to about 3cm to see how badly this plant has gone into the lawn and seems to be everywhere giving this patchy look.

Is there anyway of treating this? Shame as the lawn looked amazing last year.
Thanks.

Thank you all for your help, much appreciated.
I think the best solution suggested will be to cut as close to the soil as possible. I had another look at the patches and can see the finer grass trying to get through.
Would you say putting lawn feed down every 2 weeks be sufficient to help the finer grass grow?
I think that's much too often. One application of spring feed about now, with possibly a second in June if the weather's not too sunny and dry (it'll scorch the grass) and a slow acting autumn feed in the autumn should be plenty

Woa,don't cut too low! it's not a bowling green.Leave it an inch or at most half an inch long.Feed as Dove said it will be fine. The "weed" you show looks like rye grass which unless you have a bowling green is not a weed.
In spring there is a shortage of Nitrogen so all lawns look sick.Especially arfter the first cut.Just choose a spring and summer lawn feed aply it as the manufacturer says and all will be well.
Thanks again all for your help, much appreciated.
This is my first garden so everything is very new to me, especially lawn care!
I put down last night additional seed in the patches and raked it in to prevent the seed sitting on top.
I'll set the lawn mower for about 4/5cm high and go from there.
This sounds silly but I didn't even know there were seasonal types of feed!
Thanks again all.
