New perrenial digitalis has a snapped stem ;(

OuissiOuissi Posts: 4
I have a new perrenial digitalis which is growing marvellously and is almost half a metre high. There was what looked like a developing flower bud on the top of the stem but when I went out this morning the bud was snapped off and the stem broken image Is the plant done and dead now...or will it grow new spikes? I know you can cut the spike after the flower has gone over to get other spikes but the main stem flower on this plant never had a chance ;(

It may produce a new stem, just wait and see, nature demands flowering so give it a chance. I certainly wouldn't give up on it.

This is unfortunate but it's perennial, so it will certainly return next year and with patience, flower this year

I have perennial digitalis and find the only issue is their rate of growth does not match other perennials.  I have only managed one division in four years

The only thing I'd add to the other's advice is to determine the cause of the break. If you think it could be animal damage, it might be worth putting a little bit of protection round it - a few canes with string or wire will deter most things. If it's wind/weather damage- not a lot you can do other than a simple stake when a new stem comes through - before it gets too big. image

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

Thanks so much! I'm glad there's a chance it'll recover and still flower. I am thinking the culprit was most likely to be a small boy and his plastic sword, he's usually really careful but it's the most likely explanation
