Is this Japanese Knotweed?

Mr CleanMr Clean Posts: 3

Hi folks.

This is my first post here and I need a little expert advise. I'm not a green fingered person as such and have a very limited knowledge of plants and gardening, etc. This stuff started sprouting up in my garden and my Mother-In-Law, who does know quite a bit about gardening/plants is concerned that it may be Japanese Knotweed. (See Pics below)

We moved into this house in Oct 2013 and the area where this is growing, I cleared of bushes and everything else to make a wild flower bed and while things are starting to grow, this little red devil appeared.

Any help/advice on identifying this plant would be great. Fingers crossed it's not Japanese Knotweed.

Thank you in advance.

Thanks for the quick replies folks.

Looks like I have a lot of reading to do then. Just been a bought some Resolva Xtra Tough weeedkiller from B&Q. It was the one with the highest content of Glyphosate in.

Just gave the dreaded weed a good soaking. Will monitor and repeat daily.

I know it will be hard, but the best time to tackle anything with weedkiller is when it has a good area of leaves.

With knotweed you can also tackle it in late summer/early autumn. Cut the stem near the root, just below a node and pour or inject weedkiller into the hollow stem. Any pharmacy will sell you a plastic syringe which makes it easier.

I have some syringes left over from when my Cat was poorly and had to give him medicine. They could come in handy.

Thank you for the advice. image

  • Hmm yes looks like knotweed to me.. I always use this site to find out: http://www.phlorum.com/resources/knotweed-identification/

They have a Japanese knotweed identification page.

    Hope this helps

Years and years ago long before it was identified as a pest I actually dug some up at a friends house and took it home and planted it. I thought it looked exotic and unusual. It didnt take which im very very happy about now.
