Wallflowers yellowing?

Hi, I planted up a load of gorgeous wallflowers and tulips in an old, rusty wheelbarrow, in new multipurpose compost. They looked fab all through the winter but are now yellow, faded, small....

So, I think its the rust in the wheelbarrow, yes? Next time I'll have to put a liner in, make drainage holes...that should work, right?

But what can I do with the old compost? I was thinking of planting my nasturtiums in it but am having serious doubts.

Should I chuck the compost? Put it in my compost bin?!

You cant plant anything in a container without drain holes. The tulips and wallflowers have finished for the season now so you might as well remove them.

You can drill holes in the wheelbarrow, place some stones over the holes to allow water to run through.and plant nasturtiums.

They thrive better in old compost so you never feed those.

If the tulip bulbs havent rotted away, yoh could plant them fairly deep in the garden, you may get some come up next year.

  • Thanks for these replies! Great...but

I forgot to say that there was good drainage! Lots of holes all through the old barrow....but maybe not large enough, thought it all looked fine back in September

Up here in Yorkshire some wallflowers and tulips are still going strong...I'll leave them a week or so...miserable as they are!

OK, I'm going to go for nasturtiums, and try those tulips for next year image

    Thanks to you both!image
