onions

debs20debs20 Posts: 39

I have been given some onions from my neighbour who told me to make a hole with a dibber and drop the onion in...but then not to cover, just leave loose in the hole.

I'm sure I've heard this before but can't remember where or why they should be planted this way...

any ideas guys?

That's the way I used to plant leeks

Yes it's leeks you do that with onions the top of the bulb should just above the soil.

Sounds fine to me. Don't plant them deep. Have to say I just do it with a trowel, but I always sprout them first in the greenhouse as the birds don't seem to be interested in them if they have a green shoot.

yeah, they have green shoots...thanks for all advice. It must be the leeks I've seen planted in holes and not covered...

Had a lot of hassle from birds till the sprouts came on the onion sets. Might try "chitting"them next year.
