Zinnia free seeds

I need help. Have spent weeks growing my seeds. Have about 60 all on my window sills in their own pots. They are over a foot tall and now very wobbly have tried to put them outside to harden off but just a slight breeze blows them all over and a few have broken off. This is my first attempt at growing from seed. We do not have a greenhouse. Hope someone can help.

thanks penny

Penny I thought that was the height they eventually grew to. Mine are about 3" tall and in a cold GH. I know you don't have a GH so maybe stake them so when you put them outside it might stop them blowing over. I haven't grown them before so don't know if you should pinch them out, and by so doing reduce them..hope someone can help you.

when did you plant your seeds penny?

i planted loads of seeds and every single one has come up so i'm over run with zinnias, mine are only about 8 inches tall atm and pack says ht.18inches.

i'd suggest staking them but with 60 thats a bit unrealistic image i'm guessing i'm going to be in your position too soon so will be interested to see the answer.

This is a tricky problem with so many baby plants to care for. You could surround them with short pea sticks, lots of twiggy growth, that will stop them falling over. In the meantime it is best to harden them off on wind-free days. I'm having a similar problem with sunflower plants so they are only going outside when the weather is calm.

The Zinnias that I grow reach about 3 foot tall, although currently are about 9 inches. At the moment they are still indoors, but will go out to the cold greenhouse soon, they will not be planted out until end of May or early June.

Mine are fairly sturdy, so maybe yours have suffered from lack of light and become etiolated.

I would put them outside somewhere sheltered during the day and bring them in at night. Pinching out would probably help.

I don't know about all Zinnias, but I think most are 2-3 foot.

I've just checked the packet and it says they should grow to 55-75cm which is about about 2ft - 2ft 6" for those of us who still think non metrically

I've just potted mine up today and they must be 4-8 inches tall now and I planted them in peat pots and they were growing out there pots so I had to pot them on. I only planted 10 seeds only 8 germinated! If you harden them off put them in a sheltered spot and bring in every night! I staked a few of mine today with the little green sticks which keeps them up right whilst they are growing!
