christmas tree

tina laxtontina laxton Posts: 33

Hi All I have some Christmas trees in my garden which my grandchildren got free from santa at a garden centre for a few years running which we planted for them.now a few of them are becoming to tall and will soon be interfearing with the wires on the telegraph poles.if i just cut the tops of to stop them growing any taller what will happen to their shape. how would you go about this.

Firstly I would check very, very carefully that you are talking about telephone wires and not power cables.

They will look ugly if you cut the tops off them. Perhaps you could plant some more, but not where they will grow into any wires.

If you cut the top off, they'll just grow a new one (or four, as is usually the case.. they are a bit like hydra).  Best to plant something else there that won't get so tall (or else keep so something pruned).  Probably too late to prune the tree back to a smaller shape.

I would cut them right down.  They will look horrible if you take the tops out and they will continue to grow upwards.

If your grandchildren are still interested in them, I would cut them into logs and use them to build a logpile to encourage wildlife into your garden.

Dove, that is a really appealing idea.
