Firstly may I say. Dahlias really belong in the open ground......
Maureen said that her dahlias are in pots and will be planted into borders later when the danger of frost has passed - are you really advising that they should have been planted out early to get frosted?
Sorry gatecrashing your thread Maureen but good luck with your dahlia I love them .
My Question is when do I spray ? I've set my large varieties out in the garden already ,the year 2 s are in pots now , can I just WATER with maxicrop solution or do I foliar spray I don't normally use it in the garden ,only pots (bit pricey)
My dahlia tubers are currently in an assortment of rubber trugs and tin baths and just in water to rehydrate the tubers and start the shoots growing. I keep them in the garage overnight and bung them out in the sun on warm days or just set them in the doorway during the recent cold snap and gales.
This weekend I shall be taking cuttings of some of the shoots to increase stocks and grow them on in pots on the terrace. They'll get good quality compost and extra feeds because planting composts only have enough for 100 days and then run out of oomph. The main tubers will go in the borders this year and get lots of garden compost worked into their planting holes and as a mulch so they can build up next year's tubers and flowering strength.
I'll be making some comfrey tea next week from plants in the garden and that will be ready in 3 or 4 weeks to use as a free and very effective foliar feed.

I do the same as Obi...I never feed anything planted out in the garden other than a few chicken pellets and lots of compost to soften up the soil. But I do feed tubs and baskets.
Take no notice of Mike Allen, Maureen, he can be very rude as you will find out.
I think telling you to go and do your homework is bordering on extreme rudeness.
Please feel free to ask any questions you like, thats how we all learn, by other peoples experiences.

Thank you Punkdoc and Verdun.
The help and advice from this site is invaluable and I really appreciate it.
Did you repot in new compost? If so it will have feed. If not, it will be hungry.
Hi WW, yes I did, 2 months ago.
some shoots are 10 inches tall, is that 20 cm? Roots out end of pots, so I will repot.
thankyou for your help.

Maureen came here for advice - you've told her to go away and find out for herself

Thanks all.
Foliar feeds, do I spray onto the foliage, or into soil?
I feel the name foliar implies straight onto leaves, but would like to check.
I appreciate your experience and knowledge.
Thankyou
