How to apply blood, fish and bone fertilizer?

Hi there,

I have bought some blood, fish and bone fertilizer after being recommended on this forum. However I am struggling to apply it to my garden.

On the instructions it says I can use this around the base of established plants but for the fertilizer not to touch the plant. When you have lots of different plants all close together how do you apply it without it touching the plant? I am also so scared of putting down too much in case I kill everything around it. So as a general rule of thumb, so how do I go about this?

Thanks image

A small handful carefully sprinkled round will do the trick and tickle it in with a handfork. The rain will take the nutrients down for you. Even with densely planted areas you can still get it in and a tiny bit on foliage won't kill anything. I do it all the time in many gardens and it's hugely beneficial.

Agree with Dave, I throw it around the base of plants and shrubs and always when digging and you do see a difference. image

And if you do get some on the plants you can just gently shake it off again to fork with the rest of it into the soil. If it were me, I would then lightly water the residue off the plant that I got it on - which is what the rain would do anyway.

I just sprinkle it over dense plants, and then give them a spray with the hose on a gentle setting to help get it off the foliage and to help it work into the soil below.

I always fork it in quite well as our dogs love it!

beware also of local wildlife visiting for a snack!

Sit poised with hose and do two jobs in one image

Perhaps we should point out that Blood Fish Bone meal is a general feed for shrubs, trees and green plants.

    Bedding does not need it.

If you really want a lot of green growth - Musa, Gingers and the like - then mixing in Chicken pellets with the bone meal really boosts leaf growth.
