William Pear Tree bug eaten?

We had a young William Pear tree on a small root stock which sadly has snapped in the wind today. It had no signs of anything wrong with it and has in the last few weeks been smothered in blossom. When checking the trunk you can see that the bark is ok but just underneath the bark had been eaten away in a spiral sort of pattern. Can anyone suggest what it might be please? Im worried as we have other fruit trees. I can add a photo if that helps.

Hi Sally, yes a photo might help.  There are a few borers which attack fruit trees and they burrow into the twood beneath the bark:

Thanks for your help. I'm going to gt down to the garden center and see what pesticides they stock. My son is heartbroken - his name is William and it was his tree, bless him. The other fruit trees look ok though so fingers crossed its just this one.

Without a photo we are both simply speculating, pansyface.
