Having seen more than most in life as a copper and now enjoying my life as a gardener for myself and others. I've learnt one thing above all else. I doesn't matter, what other people think of you, that's their business, not yours, and your garden is yours, not theirs. As long as you are happy with what you are doing and what your garden looks like, then that's all that matters. So critical eyes or words can be ignored and admiring glances enjoyed, life is too short to worry what other people think. Enjoy your garden and whatever you choose to do with it.
Getting close to nature and tending a garden is such a tonic for the soul. If all your neighbours are keen gardeners then I expect they are very happy to have someone new on the road who is also taking an interest. I think the offers to lend you a sieve or garden bags were intended as friendly gestures. Do things in your own good time and don't feel that you need to compete with the neighbours. It's only when I'm out gardening that I actually see my neighbours and have a chat as our houses are quite spread out, so gardening is thing that draws us all together on my little road.
Due to a certain 'problem' I have I do find it hard to understand people a lot of the time, and being officially diagnosed only early last year I'm still getting used to now knowing just how off I can be when it comes to trying to understand people and how wrong I can be when guessing (I do that a lot). And so it's likely I'll get like this a lot while getting used to living here and used to my new neighbors, and I know that. And so I really do appreciate all of your comments. It really has reassured me that I can sometimes ask when I'm not sure.
I am enjoying myself out there. I'm a very crafty and 'nature-y' kind of person, so gardening works for me 'cause I get to learn all sorts while getting up close and really seeing everything. Digging this border might be taking a time, but in a way it's like garden archeology. I could open a small museum with what I'm finding! X ) And when I get round to planting up, for me, that's just another craft project where I get to make something new and then get to work on it long term.
And so I'm not being put off... just getting into the feel of it all, I suppose. It's all new for me... but maybe that'll end up being part of the fun too? And I actually love the idea that whatever I do will never be 'done'. If it was, what would we all do then?
I agree with Dove and from what you have said I don't have the impression your new neighbours were judging you or being unkind, think they were just being friendly and welcoming. I guess your horrible old neighbours have made you more wary. Now you know you have nothing to worry about why not start a new thread with a new happy heading telling us all about the joys your new garden is bringing you and what great plans you have x

I grew broad beans mixed with wallflowers in my last front garden. People kept stopping and asking what those pretty black and white flowers were

Well-said, Dave Morgan.

You have a great attitude - your neighbours are very lucky people to have you

Wow. Not sure if they're lucky really, I'm not capable of much in the way of neighbor-y-ness, but thank you : 3
