growing veg in polypropylene bags

After watching a YouTube video I'm considering grow in some veg in polypropylene sacks. These are available for less then ??1 each when bought in bulk so offers better value then large planters. Does anyone have any experience of undertaking this. I'm interested t ohear both positive and negative feedback please.

I've grown potatoes in those reusable shopping bags they sell at various grocery stores for about a pound. It works fine, and I got a good crop out of them.  They do take a lot of watering though.  Perhaps line the sides with compost bag sacking?

Think I've probably seen the same videos as I'm trying it too. Apparently growing in a semi-permeable bag is better than a pot due to 'air-pruning' i.e. the roots get plenty of air but stop naturally when they reach the sides rather than going round in circles. I've got some in polypropylene sacks and some in a canvas bag - 2 different varieties.  The canvas one seems to dry out a lot faster.  Early days, but an interesting experiment all the same

  • Hi guys!

Thanks for your replies. I'm also thinking about getting some weed control fabric and making a vertical gargen. I'm very excited to see how it all goes! Just need my seeds to germinate now!!
