Wisteria

Dear all, I have a Wisteria that I planted approximately 7 years ago that has never flowered. A couple of weeks ago I got very excited when what looked like flowers started to appear, however they have not come to anything. They look like flowers that are going to bloom but they have remained in this state and now seem to be crumbling. Help please

This might help to answer your question.

wendY, I shall be very interested in any replies you get to your query, because I think I have the same problem.   My wisteria has produced many buds this year for the first time.   Previously it has given me a couple of flowers, not trusses of flowers, just single flowers.   This year the budding truss grows out to about three inches, and then starts disintegrating.   Maybe this is the same as your 'crumbling'.

I'm hoping this photo will show what I am talking about.   The pale lilac, paper thin sheath (?) just drops off and leaves the little pod which does nothing.   Eventually it too just falls off.   I've never studied a wisteria flower before, so don't know what's going on.

     Can anyone help us?

Thanks, Ceres.   Maybe mine is short of potassium, according to that info sheet.   I shall remedy that.   Very frustrating, but hope springs eternal, so maybe next year will be better. image

  • Hi there, this picture is exactly what I am talking about. I cant see where on the link posted  by Ceres it mentions potassium as a possible cause?

wendY, it says inadequate levels of potassium could be cause of poor flowering, and suggests flowers of potash in spring.   Mind you, I didn't realise that the flowers for next year could be affected by shortage of water in summer of the previous year.   Lots to learn!

Glad my photo was a help.

  • Right, I shall get some potassium asap. I kept my garden well watered last summer so I don't think thats my problem. You right, the more I learn the more I realize what I don't know.I definitely have Wisteria envy though
