Wisteria Planting tips

Good Morning,

i have previously had some great advice here so I,m back !

I want to plant a wisteria along a mainly west facing wall. The area I want to plant it is currently lawn with mint and some other weed, possibly convululous (?) growing thorough it. How should I prepare the ground ? Should I just dig out the area where I wish to plant the wisteria or do I need to dig out along the length of the wall and take some steps to prevent the weeds/mint coming through. we are going to put wires up on the wall for the wisteria to follow and have all we need to do that just need some ideas for the actual planting.

thanks in advance

Sara

Mint would look good under wisteria
  • Darren636 we have mint popping up everywhere but happy to leave it as we love the smell. I'm sort of assuming that as long as we can cut the "grass" for want of a better word around the new wisteria it will be ok just to dig a hole and plant, along with require food, organic stuff etc.

Wisteria is a beast of a plant.

As long as its roots won't disturb any delicate foundations, then all it needs is sticking in the ground.

I wouldn't mollycoddle it. Just basic hole. Water bottom of hole, let it drain and plant. Bit of mulch after. Water it first summer.

Its been 20 years since I planted one and I can't remember how deep it was planted.
  • I had read that they thrive on neglect ! I will go dig my hole shortly and see what comes up. The most difficult thing will be stopping the dog digging it back up again !

    Thank you.

Ha yes. Neglect is an apt description.

Ours hasn't been fed since its first year.
