Watering cans

Can anyone recommend a decent watering can? This may sound a silly question but the rose dribbles all the time, so much so that I've been watering using my daughter's cast off mineral water bottles and that takes forever. The rose is one of those with a rubber outer rim but water seems to build up inside rather than creating a fine spray.

I'm off to get one tomorrow. I have had cheap ones which dribble. I have come to the thought, you get what you pay for,

I have really cheap plastic ones, one in each greenhouse, the rose is good for tiny seedlings I have had them for too many years to remember, never dribbled or leaked. Probably came from a supermarket.

I have exactly the same problem. I've tried lots of different cans and roses. My hose pipe has a really good setting for fine watering but I have a water butt, which I use a lot and also some things are too much of a distance from the hose. Oldtyke - please let us know what you bought and how you found it.

Glad its not just me then - the can is fine its just the rose. Its ok for bigger plants but of course little seedlings can become dislodged.

Have you tried wrapping something round the spout, like plumbers tape or something to make a washer out of.

I have tried that but it didn't solve the problem.

Have you tried removing the metal plate with the holes and giving it a good clean? Then replace it.

Make sure you only fill the watering can with clean water.
  • I've a Haws can and would recommend it. It just works properly and waters consistently and predictably. They are a bit pricey though but they last and it's easy finding replacement roses.

A stright spout will give laminar flow. One with the fill hole at the back is better than one with the fill hole at the front

Oh blimey, it sounds as if I need a physics degree! Nevertheless, all I need to remember is straight spout and back filling hole and hopefully I might have success. Earlier the rose fell off the can and has probably drowned the seeds. Curses! Oldtyke - any joy?
