tulips

What have I done wrong? Last year I had a bumper crop of Tulips, and this year, only 1 flowered. It may be that I moved them to another container, and it wasnt deep enough/ ? I dont have beds with soil, only gravel.

How did you treat them last year after they flowered?  Did the leaves die down naturally in a brightly lit area?

With tulips the largest bulb will flower and the smallest will produce leave, did you divide them or just planted them as they are?

Blue Onion, I pulled them up after flowering and put in shed. No, didnt wait for leaves to die down. I am a very amateur gardener, and a casual one at that.

Logan, I just planted them as they were. Must I just leave the leaves now, and hope for late flowering/? Thank you both for replies.

Karools, the bulb is essentially a stored flower.  The first year you buy tulips  (or any flowering bulbs) you are pretty much guaranteed a result but as soon as the flowers are over you should snap off the seed pod that will form at the end of the stem and keep watering the leave that are busy supplying food to form next yrs flower

You can also feed the bulbs if that's not too technical but most import is to allow those leaves to use every moment they have left to do their job image

After they are withered and brown store them in the dark or just leave them in situ for next year's display

Thank  you, Wintersong. I will, most certainly, heed your advice.I remember Monty talking about tulips, but, by that time, I had already uprooted them.
