Whilst helping a neighbour out with some weeding recently I came across this horror. The stalk was about three inches wide and there were6 or 7 flowers on top. Is this unusual or what?

fasciation. A genetic mutation, thought to be caused ( but nobody is certain ) by damage to the growing tip.

I've seen it on foxgloves, forsythia and Veronicatrum Fascination is named because it's so prone to fasciation.
