How close is nearby?

in Fruit & veg
I've just treated myself to an espalier greengage (var. Old Green Gage), which I plan to plant next to a south facing fence once I have done my best as regards soil improvement etc. On looking up cultivation info. I see that this is described as 'partially self-fertile' and may well fruit better if there is another plum to cross-pollinate it 'nearby'. How close is nearby - does anybody know? I live in an village area surrounded by mature gardens, but the only plum I know for sure is around here is a little wild plum which is probably about a quarter of a mile away as the bee flies. Will this do? If not, how worried should I be that I'm never going to taste a greengage straight from the tree?

Thanks pansyface. Wasn't sure if doing it with a brush would work if it was partially self-fertile, because I thought if the bees couldn't do it my efforts would probably be no better, so that's good to know. With all the gardens round here I reckon there must be enough with plums - and enough wild plums and sloes - to stand a good chance of there being something within that distance.
