Painted Sage
I got some painted sage seeds off ebay a couple of years ago and loved the flowers, but last year they didn't come to anything when I tried again. Are these hard to grow and what kind of conditions do they like? I'm going to order more and try again because I really loved them.

Were they seeds from the same package? Or did you get a new package to sow? What do you mean they didn't come to anything? Did they germinate? Did the seedlings die? Did they just not flower?
No it was a new pkt last year but I never got any plants from them, I don't know what happened. Maybe planted them too early? I really loved these flowers and never saw them in a garden centre.
I had to google painted sage, I can't remember what we called them when I was a kid but it wasn't that.
Salvia horminum, have I got the right one? Sunny patch, well drained, I think they're hardy. You won't find them in garden centres, I think they're best sown direct. You could sow some when these frosty might are over and the rain comes. Plenty soon enough. Collect and save some seed for next year

I think I must have put the seeds out too early last year. I will maybe start them off on the windowsill in the sun, the season is so short here. Thanks!
EDITED- actually it seems to be this Salvia viridis var. comata Painted Sage
They are beautiful.. makes me want to plant some now.
