Thank you. I googled it and searched the RHS website to find out what it looks like fully grown and if it's a weed. I think I've determined it's persicaria but still not sure if it's a weed.
There are types of persicaria which are garden plants, however I'm pretty sure the one you have is the one usually regarded as a weed. It's often found on arable land and gardens.
Just in case its name worries you, although it is related, it is not Japanese Knotweed and there is no need to panic
