    Any plant that is in shade will benefit from mulching every spring.

    Cotoneaster will be better in the shade than pyracantha

    Cotoneaster looks like it would be more difficult to train to grow upwards!  image I've only ever grown clematis as a climber and that just does it itself so I'm a bit concerned that I'd struggle with cotoneaster!

    I have a pyracantha in my front garden, which is in shade until 2pm. I have cut it back to a branch and it is now about 7ft tall. It always has orange berries and the blackbirds love it.
