problems germinating

Anyone else had problems with germinating this year?  Bought 4 packs White Ensign Sweet Peas, not one germinated.  Other varieties (from big well known suppliers) have had very poor germination.  For years I have started them off in my conservatory, in John Innes no;2.  Also zero germination from Cucumbers, always started off in my bedroom window.   Bought a book on Allotment gardening,  he sows them in his airing cupboard, tried that as well.  Funny, thing I put some Sweet Peas seeds in a pot last summer (late) they have overwintered and are growing well.  Does anyone but me, think that a garden of up to 100m, is no way MEDIUM!

Nanny beach, have pm d you.

  • If you have any concerns about germinaion put some  seeds straight out of the packet and lie  them in a soaked, then squeezed peice of kitchen towel place this into a ploybag sealed at the top after blowing in some air to expand the bag a little.

Place bag in kitchen cupboard and close door

Remove and check root starting to break out from the seed , will be perhaps just a swelling. at this stage .

Once roots and first stem about half an inch remove and pot on do not coodle.

This time of year put out and only bring pots in if a frost is forecast.

If after max of 7 days seeds have not swollen and germinated seek refund.

Roger Parsons Sweet Peas were my choice this year and of three cultivars 100% germination from five packets. These were just sown direct into root trainers .

I have never had such good germination in 45 years of growing and showing .

I did use root trainers, in the past have had good results with these peat pots (I plant the whole thing)  I did in fact get a refund for the White Ensign.  I have direct sowed my last pack, thanks for the tips, I shall try them all.  granma, I could not make head or tail of your blog???

I am rubbish at this sort of stuff, my Daughter thought Facebook, she doesnt know about this site, I thought it was something rude in some strange code (like texting!!!) I have found it thanks, replied, AND bought some more sweet Peas from Roger Parsons, which are, oddly enough a lot cheaper than the ones I had been buying. Thanks to all.

I'm getting poor germination on my over-winter cold germinators. I'm blaming too little cold in winter and too much cold in springimage.

    Still hope but it diminishes
