Sorry can't think the varieties, all I can say they were not Clematis like Nelly Moser or similar. I tend to like slightly unusual types, perhaps that's part of my problem and they were not so strong or vigorous. Thank you for trying to help with such scant information.
I have found that sometimes at this time of year a clematis will put on a lot of growth and then a shoot will just flop and die back. I leave it alone and it grows new sideshoots and is fine.
This has happened to my Clem. viticella Purpurea Plena Elegans this spring. It was planted last spring against a west-facing wall. It has performed beautifully. It was cut hard back and is now making lots of new growth.
Last week the top 12 inches or so of the tallest shoot just became limp and floppy. I looked for snail damage but couldn't see any. The soil is moist. It's in a protected spot, nothing had knocked it - I just left it alone and can see that already that stem is putting out side shoots.
As I've said, this is not the first time I've had this happen to a clematis - I'm not worried about it because it never seems to affect the plant in the longer term, but I am curious as to why this happens
Perhaps Richard has an idea?

My clematis has been in the ground for about six weeks and was looking great. But we got up yesterday and it looks like it died! 😱 it was growing so well and had grown bout three feet! Can anyone help??
What variety is it, where have you planted it and have you watered it since you planted it? They are very thirsty plants and need watering regularly after planting while they get their roots down.
Vendée - 20kms from Atlantic coast.

Clematis can go underground for a whole year after suffering some tragedy
I had an early flowering Koreana that died off as soon as I put it in the ground last year and this spring it has come back with vengeance
yes wintersong 2 of mine came/coming back from the dead! hurrah!!
Some clematis need planting deep, others do not.
rosemummy---------today 2 of them have slightly wilted tips to sems. ( stems ?)
Not wilted, probably wind damage.
