Fertilizing bedding

Hi,just read in GW mag that it is a good idea to water bedding plants with tomato fertilizer,now I would do this in a few weeks when they are planted out but the picture shows watering plugs and I tend to water by putting in troughs at this stage not from the top,What do you do ??
