Hi Jude - I  have a similar border in my back garden which is against the rear fence and is very narrow. I have many of the previously mentioned plants in it and at one end, in a higher raised section, I have Osmanthus burkwoodii  which is flowering just now. It's a good evergreen with small white flowers.  At the other end I have Pachysandra terminalis which has just finished flowering. Good evergreen ground cover with white flowers. Some of the Heucheras and Tiarellas will also be happy there. Lots of varieties available. I have one called Alabama Sunrise which has good bright foliage. image

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

Jasmine nudiflorum needs good light and only a little sunshine sometime during the day, otherwise it's just fine if on a north facing fence...and the yellow flowers are perfect for the worst time of the year.  My neighbour gave me a cutting 2 years ago which will need pruning next year and it had glorious flowers this year.  It's the officianale that needs sun.

Japanese anemone, camilias do really well, delphiniums, bluebells, snowdrops daffodils, Arum Lily's , monbretia - I have all of these in total shade in border against North facing fence and they do amazingly well!
