Plant/Weed ID

in Plants
I have something growing under a newly planted hedge which I assumed was bindweed. It has a dark purple twining stem which is just starting to come into classic bindweed shaped leaves.

When I dug it up however, it has huge roots, almost the thickness of tree roots. They look woody on the outside but are white and fleshy on the inside.

Any ideas? Is this just a kind of bindweed I haven't come across before or something else?
