Many years ago a policeman told me to do exactly what you suggested Pauline because he said that there had been a spate of thefts where the person had broken the window with their elbow and reached in to take the handbag.
Have to admit that I've never done it though and have been driving for nearly forty years without problems.
I never think about where my bag is in the car always getting ticked off for leaving it on show and forgetting to take it with me when I park when I do the chairman has to pay for the shopping (all comes from the same pot BUT it feels like a result)
When I go into the city on the bus, if I'm sitting on the driver's side of the bus I always try to check the wing mirror as we pull out from the slip road onto the main Newmarket Road
Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.
When I was a student in Manchester, I was warned to always lock the doors(on my morris minor) before stopping at the traffic lights next to the Harp lager place, near Moss side, because the locals had a habit of getting into any empty passenger seats if you had to stop at the traffic lights.
Fidget, that reminds me of the Duchess of Argyll (not the real one but a dotty neighbour I had at one time). Also a Princess of Hanover no less. She hadn't got a car and couldn't have driven one anyway. So she used to wait by the road if she wanted to go into town and jump into the road if a likely looking vehicle came along. Quite a number of locals declared she had nearly caused them a serious risk of a heart attack
You might be surprised at how easily side windows can be broken. I've seen footage of tealeafs hitting side windows with very small stones and the window shattering. Other than the windscreen, windows are more for keeping the weather out than anything else.
What scares me most is the people who drive with loose dogs in the car or as they might be better known, potentially fatal projectiles in the event of an accident...

Think it would be one heck of an elbow that broke a window on my car

It would, wouldn't it - I wonder what's the elbow equivalent of a knuckle duster!

I loop the handbag straps over the gear stick.
