Small red worms
These small red earthworms? keep killing my plants. I thought worms were friends! but these are nasty little things. They attach themselves to the roots of plants and although there seems to be no root damage the plant dies as though it's been poisoned. I wonder if they could have been in the horse manure I had delivered last September.I would be grateful for advice on how to cope with these little pests.

Google cutworm pupae and see is the 'red worms' are the same as those.
Could it be a wireworm? They are a bit different than earthworms though.. they have legs, and move differently.
Could you post some pictures?

They don't grow bigger than this.
Hope you are able see these ok. Thank you from Tulip Lady
That looks like a Small Redworm to me - it's likely to have come from the manure and they won't harm your plants. They help to break down decomposing organic matter in the soil.
I think the problem for your plants is that the manure is too fresh and is burning the plants. Scrape it off the ground and add it to your compost heap to allow it to rot down thoroughly.

Thank you for your replies, I have taken note and feel happier about not having an unidentified plague of worms in my garden!!!
