Azalea

Hi has anyone's azalea flowered yet this year? Mine hasn't and is looking totally ravaged by Catipilars. Any tips on how to rescue ? Growing in a pot by the way. Thanks

Unusual for any bugs to attack an Azalea, keep it well watered with soft water (rain water) and wait, most Azalea's flower in May anyway.

  • As Dave says the flowering season for them is only just starting image I have Azaleas and Rhododendrons in containers, give them a specialised liquid feed and water using rain water, make sure you water them well in the summer months too.
One of mine came into flower this week and I'm looking forward to the others following.

NGCARDS how does yours look so healthy? Mine looks a total disaster image((

    What's your secret?

Do you not find catapilars eating the leaves?
  • To be fair it did look quite straggly a few weeks ago but an Ericacious feed perked it up. Is yours planted in Ericacious compost?
I haven't seen any Caterpillars on mine but I haven't really looked too closely.
All I tend to do is make sure they're kept watered in the Summer months and get a good feed at the start of the year. I'm sure once your's has been fed it'l perk up image

My Azalea Japonica 'Amoena' has been in full bloom for a week now. It has been flowering faithfully ever since it was planted (about half a dozen specimens) 15 years ago. My wife finds the colour a bit too "flashy", though. In the past 2 or 3 years it suffered a little bit from leaf gall—Exobasidium vaccinii after flowering.
