Mystery Plant

CherylNTCherylNT Posts: 13

Hi all, does anybody know what this plant is? We've just moved into our first house with a garden and there are so many plants that I don't recognise! I'd be very grateful if anyone could tell me what this one is:

Looks like one of the purple cultivars of Sambucus nigra to me. Don't think it's lacy enough for 'Black Lace'

Hi Brenda. If you can enlarge the pic have a close look at the stems, and their joints. The divided leaf shape is clear as well.image

I would go for Sambucus nigra over Acer palmatum dissectum nigra/purpera.

It is a Sambucus, but leaves are not "filigree" enough for black lace, so ? variet.

How can you lie there and think of England

I think black lace is now called Eva, for some reason, I reckon that's the chap. If you enlarge the photo, you can see the stems are clearly sambucus.

Wow, thank you everyone - what fast work! So that means that this will start developing flowers and then berries over the coming months? If yes then I can't wait to see how the plant develops. When we moved in it consisted of just a few branches and I didn't know whether it was alive or dead!

I know it's in leaf now, but I'd be tempted to cut those tallest shoots back to encourage it to bush out. I'd also treat the ground elder underneath.

I was actually wondering how to make it more bushy. What do you mean by treating the ground elder underneath? Sorry but I am really really new to this!
