How to Train Honeysuckle

ommthreeommthree Posts: 314

Hi All,

I have a climbing honeysuckle (Lonicera periclymenum) which I planted on my balcony in a pot last year. It's growing very well, and putting on plenty of fresh growth. Ih ave three vertical canes attached to the wall, and have tried to "lead" the honeysuckle to these by attaching the three smaller cans on which the plant was initially growing to the new support. The new supports are around 20cm apart.

Does that sounds about right? Do I need to tie the new growth in or somehow encourage it to wind around the supports, or should I just let it sort itself out? I'm concerned that the supports might be too far apart or that I'll just end up with a load of growth hanging down rather than climbing up.

Thank you!

Honeysuckle is like a spaniel.....impossible to train. Give it some support (a trellis is good) to climb up and it will figure it out by itself but they are vigorous plants and tend to romp where the will takes them.

    This has advice on pruning.
