Fabulous, thank you folks.  I dug it up when clearing a bed so stuck the root back in next to the path thinking I'd know where it was then mistakenly put a piece of paving over it.  It made its way out though so I'm pleased.  I put another piece in a pot in the cold frame and this has succeeded too.  Just read that you can divide this in spring so I guess that's what I've done inadvertently! image  ...now to find it a permanent home.

    Yes, Solomon's Seal for certain.

I'm only posting to say it's worth keeping an eye out for hungry colonies of a particularly pest (caterpillar I think) that will attack Soloman's Seal if it finds it: it reduced my plants to virtual skeletons a year or two ago.

I'm not sure when they come but I believe the remedy (and/or prevention) I used was Derris Powder - something recommended in a rather dated gardening book I had. Not sure whether it's still on the market; there may be something else better recommended nowadays.

  • Solomans Seal gets attacked by sawfly which strips the leaves . Thanks Birdy I will try Derris on my plants this year.

yes it is Hostafan1, I have inherited a lot of hostas.  I dug one out of the front garden where it was too big, gave bits away to people and (close your ears) threw the rest near the compost heap.  I was tidying up and found it in spring and it had started sprouting so I took pity on it and have divided it and put it in "Hosta alley" which is down the side of the house - sun in the morning then late on in the evening.  Looking forward to seeing the effect.  If it's good, I'll share image

Thanks for the tip Birdy13, I can't fail to see any attack because not knowing what the root was, it's been put in a totally inappropriate place so I see it as part of daily moving about (almost have to step over it).  If I see anything, I'll be on it.

  • I love hosta,s very easy to divide and grow on,look fantastic around a postage only problem being so do the slugs, I heard there was a plant you can grow alongside to help deter them but can't remember what it is. I don't want to use pellets cos of the wildlife and my cats
