red water in trough
My son in law has a rainwater fed galvanised trough which has developed a red oily film on the surface of the water. There is no rust around. The only tree near is a cypress. Any ideas?

It's likely to be an algal bloom, similar to green water in ponds, tanks etc. They come in different colours. I wouldn't drink or bathe in it, but it's fine for watering the garden.

Its the fact that its oily that worries us. He uses it to soak his chestnut for his trugs and it is leaving a red stain. He has never had this prob before in many years of trug making
Thanks that sounds about right
