any ideas hanging basket liners?

I've tried using wooly jumpers and old floral curtains, but nothing looks as good as moss. Anyone got any ideas for recyclable material that looks good as a liner for baskets?

  • I just re-use reversed compost bags with drainage holes poked through.

Snap!   It's a case of 'waste not, want not', and more funds available for plants!   If your plants hang down over the edges of the basket you won't see the black plastic.

  • Exactly. I tend to use baskets where you can't see the liners though, but that's just my preference image

This may sound silly but can you use moss from your lawn?  I know it's a different kind of moss.  There's got to be some good in it.  (I'm new to having a lawn and also new to living in a climate in which moss grows in your lawn.)

  • Ahem I don't have moss in my lawn...haha plenty of dandelions/daisies though. Thanks everyone - I will give the plastic liner a go - once plants grow no-one can see....unless anyone got any better ideas?

Watery - you and me both, unaccustomed to moss growing in the lawn!

A very slightly used nappy or two?  (Pee only, obviously).  Sometimes the baby's filled his nappy just a short time prior to bath.. and when I take the fresh one off it seems 'unused'.. but I would feel weird about putting him back into it again after his bath.  You could save them up to use as liners for your hanging basket.  image  Plus, Bob Flowerdew is always carrying on about peeing on the compost heap, so a bit in the bottom of your basket won't do a speck of harm.

  • Haha they probably retain water too with the crystals within nappy - long time since any of mine were in nappies though image

I have used hay between the basket and the liner (black plastic bag). Looks okay.
