Cherry Tree

Can someone help me please, last year my Cherry trees were decimated by Blackfly, i would like to know when to spray the trees as at the moment they are blossoming and dont want to harm the trees by spraying to early, should i wait until the blossom has gone ?     Thanks in advance regards Chris

You can't effectively preventively spray against blackfly (which are aphids), only deal with them after they appear (if they do.)  However, you can use a grease-band around the trunk to prevent ants climbing the tree as ants 'farm' aphids and carry them around, placing them on the youngest leaves.

A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
  • Thanks Bob much appreciated will get myself a greaseband also keep a very keen eye on the Blackfly if and when they appear. regards Chris

I would also try to boost its health. Cherries do not like poor drainage, poor acid soils and shade. If any of these apply you need to change the conditions. Definitely feed with a general fertiliser suchs fish, blood and bone.

You can put a ring of ant powder around the base of the tree, preventing ants climbing up. It only lasts a few weeks, and of course rain will remove it. It seems to work for my currants, combined with a soapy water spray of any aphids.

  • Hello, do you think these treatments would work on a bird cherry tree with black fly, as I don't want to use pesticides. Thank you, Amy
