Can certainly see why you cut it back! I think you're unlikely to get much fresh growth out of those old woody stems. Looks like Yew? (Which is a conifer, btw. ).
What about taking it all out next to the building and making some cold-frames?
I think I'd make that a bit narrower, taper it in towards the top a bit. I would expect it to make a hedge again and you might as well start with a good shape
How is the hedge now? We've just moved into a house with a huge overgrown hedge like yours and are unsure how it will recover once it has had a good cut back.

It looks like Lonicera nitida to me, so it should come back quite quickly.

Well this is how i left it. Ill see what its like in 12 months.
