japanese anemone (Anemone X hybrida) invasion

Had a massive clear out of this anemone, it had become too invasive.  Kept popping up where it was not wanted, got under low walls in my garden, and into neighbouring flower beds.  So, although the flower is really attractive, I decided to clear it all.  Trouble is it seems to send out dead looking roots, and they are dark brown, so impossible to get every one. Can anyone tell me if any left over roots will start sprouting again?!

You bet they will.  I'm still trying to get rid of mine after a couple of years.  I'm still applying glysophate to new growth.  If it likes the conditions it's a nightmare to get rid of.

When I moved to this house 15 yrs ago they were everywhere but I dug them up except for a few at the back but found to my cost that if I chopped through any of the root more plants grew . But actually this year I wanted to increase stock so chopped up some roots and planted them in some gritty compost and they grew.

So digging out carefully will get them out just dont snap roots
  • Thanks everyone for your advice.  I have just come back from a holiday in Portugal and so catching up on my postings.  Checked on the japanese anemone, and lo and behold as you said, there were two shooting up!  So I ousted them out, and they came clean away, but I know I will be in for a long battle.  Reminds me of Japanese Knotweed, same problem, but thank goodness I haven't any of that in the garden!
