How to solve my moss destroyed lawn !!

Hi there,

I am new to this forum and quite a novice in the gardening world so I would really like some advice on my lawn.

I have provided 3 photos which explain a little of the background to my garden and current state!

So, we moved into our house 5 years ago and as you can see in my first photo we inherited a lovely garage in our garden. This was taken away, we got the diggers in and we laid a lawn and made what I think is quite a nice little garden which I have been improving on each year. The lawn was laid 4 years ago and was all turf. Underneath that horrid garage was a mixture of tough clay and rubble. Before laying the turf I put in as much manure as I could into the clay soil, took out as many rocks as my body could take and laid a little top soil before we put the turf down.

Our garden is north facing and from about March - October the top tier pretty much gets full sun. Just about now the bottom tier is now almost all getting sun but the top certainly gets more. It does suffer in the summer and crack pretty quickly but I do water as often as a I can. In the winter it sees no sun and gets pretty wet.

This winter was really, really wet and the garden saw no sunlight due to its position and it got ravaged by moss. When I first started to grapple it I thought I'd lost all my turf! I put down some evergreen which killed the moss back in March and I have had several vigerious moss rakes and I simply haven't got the energy anymore so as much moss I can get rid of is gone!

So, as you can see from photo 3 the middle of the lawn is OK but the sides are very patchy. My question is what is the best way to get my lawn back? Is it going to get worse as the years go on or can I bring it back? Do you think a simply lawn seeding and watering daily might get my lawn back up and running? Or should I be doing something more serious. And how can I try and prevent as much moss next winter? I heard aereating is worth doing but is that in the Autumn?

I really want to get my lawn back as soon as possible for the summer so any help would be really graetfully received.

Thanks

Rich

My garden faces north as well and every year I have a battle with  moss. I put down moss killer, scarify it then reseed. The soil is quite light. This year I have called in the big guns and I have employed a company to do all of the above to see if there is an improvement! Fingers crossed. So yes, you seem to be doing all the right things. Perhaps try reseeding it with a shady grass mix? Normally aereating it is done in the autumn and lawn sand swept in to the holes.
