Help with flower/plant choice in new beds...
in Talkback
Hi there. Someone in my local forum (Harrow) has suggested I post my question in here.
I am looking for some real help in choosing some plants/flowers to plant in 2 new long flowerbeds..
I appreciate my question might be a little vague but I have a rough idea of what I want but don't know where to start.
- My garden is south facing and the flower beds run down both side.
- They measure around 1m deep and 7m long ( On one side and the other side is 1m deep and around 5m long.
- I do like that kind of messy secret garden kind of look but would prefer to keep maintenance to a minimum.
Let me know your thoughts please.
Thanks
Daniel

I'd just go to a garden center once a month and pick out whatever looks good (and suits the situation), and start planting. Undulating heights will give you that messy look.. but I would consider a sort of color scheme to give you some visual unity. Maybe jewel tones, hot colors, or shades of purple/white/pink.. whatever appeals to you. It will help bring the look together.
as blue onion says try and choose a colour scheme of i would say three colours, perennial plants mainly die down each year but come back the following year and these will give you the look you are after, you could plant some evergreen plants also to give you some winter interest but when you go to the garden centre or car boot sales will be starting soon and a good place to pick up cheap plants you will see what you like and the look you are after. have fun.
I find the butterfly bush (Buddleja davidii?) looks lovely summer, fall, and winter. You cut it back hard every spring right down near the ground.. but that could be good in a situation near spring bulbs that need the light to build up reserves that time of year.
