Tomato seedlings wilting

Hi, I potted up all my tomato seedlings at the weekend. They were in seed trays in the conservatory.Since potting i placed them in my plastic greenhouse outside.

I came home this afternoon to find a few of them shriveled and wilted. It was frosty this morning. Not sure if thats that or if they are too hot in the greenhouse in the sun.

What do you think? Should i move the greenhouse to a less sunny spot, or is max sun good? Was it the frost?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

Jason

Bring them back into the conservatory until they are happier and a bit bigger then move them to the greenhouse during the daytime and bring them indoors at night for about a week, then they can stay out there permanently unless it is going to be frosty.

    Thanks both.

I brought about a third back in, would bring them all in but space prevents it.

They hadn't dried out, so looks like frost/sun. That said the conservatory is as sunny, so maybe frost is the real culprit.

Will try and get some fleece for those left out. If they make it through tonight.

Arts certainly a letting curve luckily I have / had about 40 seedlings. I guess those that survive will be pretty strong specimens!

    Thanks again.

When I've pricked out tomatoes I made sure they have at least one set of true leaves ,they will have some roots by then. When pricked out don't leave them in the sun because they will wilt.Sometimes they wilt as soon as they've been pricked out but they do recover.

If its frost damage the leaves will go white.

Gardening on the wild, windy west side of Dartmoor.

  • If it's only a few of them, could you have damaged the stems when pricking out and potting on?

I usually find my tomatoes droop a bit after repotting in the greenhouse if it's hot, but they recover in  few hours with a good soaking.

As they say never touch the stems when pricking out just handle with a leaf, and don't firm down much.

  • Always droop initially…. have faith…. give them support and plenty of water….  should be ok within 24/48 hours
