do I plant one plant in one container, or does it take several plants in the same container

the baby plants are on their way and I want to give them a good start

I'd put just one fuchsia in a pot that size. The baby plants may need to go into smaller pots to start with, then plant them into the large pots when they have grown a bit. Its too early to put them outside.

It says in the description that the plant grows up to 5 foot high by 3 foot wide so one per pot I would think, as Ceres says they will need to go into a smaller pot first to grow on.

  • Hi Nikki, you say you want to block out an unsightly shed.........but do you realise that although the fuchsia is hardy, it isn't evergreen, so the shed would not be completely disguised during winter/early spring. There should be lots of branches on the plant so may be enough for your needs.

I think that's too much to expect of a fuchsia. It's hardy if you live in the right place. Not evergreen as Nd says, will probably die back in winter if it doesn't die completely and you'll be waiting till mid-summer for cover of any sort. And they don't really climb, they're taller than the traditional bushy fuchsia. Climbers have some method of hanging on, tendrils, twining or thorns.

How does your unsightly neighbour feel about their shed being covered? It could be the fuchsias are just the thing to shield it from your eyes during the summer but maybe you could add something evergreen to the mix for a bit of winter cover too. Climbers that hang on could damage the shed.
  • Hello everyone!

I'm also waiting for my climbing fuchsias to arrive. Doesn't sound like they really climb image.  Also Nutcutlet makes it sound like they may not survive the winterimage.

I'm a bit concerned now. Does anyone think they might live if I wrap some of that fleece stuff round them come the winter?

The description on the website really did make it sound like they climbed, am a bit annoyed nowimage

I was going to get one of these last year, when I read about them they didn't seem to be much of a climber.

Do you mean the fuchsia will actually climb on/over the shed? I don't think I'd like it if it were mine. As Ceres says it could damage the wood and get inbetween the 'slats'
